1 :: KDA, Korean Diabetes Association ::

Dear colleagues,

My name is Sei Hyun Baik from Korea University, and I have been appointed the 39th President of the Korean Diabetes Association (KDA).

As I give my New Year greetings as the new President of our association, I am full of excitement and anticipation for the year of 2022 that I will spend with all members.

Founded in 1968, KDA has made remarkable progress particularly in thanks to the devoted efforts of many senior members over a long period of time, and has now grown into a leading diabetes society in Asia beyond Korea. Since 2011, we have held ICDM, which has established its status as an international academic conference, and DMJ has gained recognition as an international academic journal and continues to raise its reputation. All these developments are the fruit of our members' hard work and dedication.

Currently, KDA has a membership pool of about 4,000 medical practitioners, and members from a wide variety of fields such as clinical medicine, basic medicine, nursing, nutrition, social welfare, and exercise are active in 20 affiliated specialized committees and research groups, etc. The Board of Directors, led by directors in charge of each field, is also working tirelessly for the progress of the association. In recent years, humanity has been going through a difficult time due to the COVID-19 crisis, and we have brought our offline meetings and conferences online in line with the COVID-19 prevention measures. These online meetings may be less than ideal compared with face-to-face meetings, but there is also a positive side in this change as it promotes the expansion of our association via a virtual space. Despite all the hardships to come, KDA will make ceaseless efforts to adapt to new environmental changes.

I would like to express my gratitude to former executives and members who have led our association to this day with the spirit of devotion and service. This year, instead of pursuing only visible achievements, I will do my best as we all work together to make our association as another steppingstone for human health promotion by extending our work beyond overcoming diabetes.

I wish each of you good luck and health and ask for greater support and active participation.

Thank you,

President of Korean Diabetes Association
Sei Hyun Baik

Dear colleagues,

I extend my New Year greetings to you. My name is Kyu Chang Won, and I have recently been selected as chairman of the Board of directors of the Korean Diabetes Association (KDA).

In this Imin Year, the Year of Black Tiger, I hope that all your wishes come true and that your home will be filled with happiness. Despite the unprecedented crisis brought by COVID-19, KDA was able to continue to grow and develop thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of all members. As the new Chief Director, I will always listen to the voices of members who expect KDA to use this crisis as an opportunity to become a world-leading society. I pledge to do my utmost during my term to maximize the capabilities of our association and actively respond to changes, making it a matchless "super-gap" society.

KDA: Leaping forward with the value of coexistence and unity
We live in a time when the value of unity is desperately needed more than ever. The greatest feature and strength of our association is diversity. In order for diversity to become the driving force for the development of KDA, we the Board of Directors will do our best with an open mind and a flexible attitude to bring together all members and promote a sense of ownership. I will also encourage members of various ranks and generations including officers and councilors to participate in the association's activities with a sense of ownership in respective positions. I will remain devoted to making KDA an organization that you can proudly call “our society” by embracing your valuable experience and passion.

In addition, we will do our best to listen to the opinions of diabetic people, who are the reason for our organization’s existence. We will fulfill our duties as diabetes experts by working with diabetic groups to prevent diabetic people from being harmed by misinformation or improper treatment. Furthermore, we will strengthen strategic partnerships with diabetic groups so that our voices can be heard louder by the government. At a time like this when the value of coexistence and unity is more significant than ever, I will always be in the position of serving each and every one of our members to achieve this value. I believe that when the voices of each member harmonize and turn into a single shout, the power and status of KDA will be stronger and higher.

KDA: Expanding its influence to the world beyond Asia
Over the past 10 years, ICDM has achieved gradual growth and become a true international academic conference in Asia, while DMJ has gained an IF that exceeds 5 points. Both have become established as an international academic conference and journal, respectively. KDA will not be satisfied with the present accomplishments but will expand the participation of international members so that we can break through into a global network that surpasses Korea and Asia. We will create a world-class academic conference with an influence that goes beyond our own region by making the most of online conferencing. To this end, we will actively exchange academic education programs with academic organizations in Asia, the Americas, and Europe.

KDA: Opening a new future by nurturing the next generation
There is no fruit unless seeds are sown. I believe that discovering talented next-generation medical practitioners and scholars and encouraging them to actively participate in the association's activities will be the driving force for the sustainable development of KDA. In this regard, we will expand the proportion of members in their 30s and 40s in our activities to bring a fresh and lively atmosphere to our organization. In order to increase opportunities for residents and students to participate in academic conferences, we will provide them with various educational programs and benefits, and actively encourage them to join our membership. We will also expand research funding support for young professors.

KDA: Leading the development of a comprehensive national diabetes management model and roadmap
KDA has drawn national attention to overcoming diabetes through our dedicated efforts. We now feel a great sense of responsibility in institutionalizing a new level of a national diabetes management model. In addition, for the future of KDA and our successors, we will do our best so that the voice of all KDA members will be reflected in the normalization of treatment expenses, which will allow diabetes specialists to be better treated. We will also strive to ensure that KDA can lead the development of national policies prepared with great care by former board members. Inheriting a valuable heritage, we will create a harmonious KDA, and KDA Integrity to continuously change and develop with future generations.

Lastly, as we look forward to your continued interest in our activities and active opinion sharing, all of the directors and I, who will serve you during our term, promise to remain devoted to KDA with a glad heart.

Thank you,

Chairman of Board of Directors
Kyu Chang Won
