Implementation of lockdowns during COVID-19 pandemic did not entirely worsen glycaemic control in patients with diabetes who were able to maintain healthy daily habits. The use of continuous glucose monitor (CGM) as a remote diabetic monitoring strategy are recommended for good control of metabolic parameters in patients who were unable to access in-person consultations with physicians during lockdown. This study revealed that TIR and TAR were improved, although FBG were worsened. Triglyceride was the only lipid control that found significantly worsened. Glycaemic control in T1DM patients was substantially more superior to control in T2DM patients.

Highlights:

• Screening scores for Diabetes & Chronic Kidney Disease are available in the USA and Korea, and being used in practice to identify persons at risk.
• These scores performed well in contemporary nationally representative NHANES and KNHANES.
• Diabetes and Kidney Disease are commonly present in persons with COVID-19.
• Korean adults tend to have lower cardiovascular risk than US adults.
• However, Korea is not a "safe" zone for prehypertension, prediabetes and undiagnosed diabetes.
• These screening scores could be simple and useful tools as the “first step” for self-assessment and health education for the general public, which can start from home or communities.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in young patients is on the rise given the increasing burden of obesity worldwide. This study therefore sought to analyze changes in the prevalence of T2DM in Koreans younger than 30 years according to sex, age, and level of income based on health insurance claims recorded in the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database. Between 2002 and 2016, the prevalence of T2DM in Korean children, adolescents, and young adults younger than 30 years of age exhibited a significant increase by 4.43 times. Increasing trend of T2DM prevalence of 10 to 19 years preceded earlier than that seen in the age group of 20 to 29 years, especially in low-income families. Future studies and collaborations with social support systems to prevent T2DM at an early age group should be performed.
